Chapter One: The Mission
Once, there were two spirits; the spirit of light and the spirit of shadow. They were sometimes thought of as the Yin and Yang. One day, as these two spirits frolicked in the clouds, the Earth spirit summoned them. He had a message. "Young spirits," he bellowed. "There is a catastrophe on Earth. You must travel to the Earth in the form of a cat and solve this problem." "But spirit," questioned the spirit of shadow. "What shall we be called, and what is our mission?" "You must find the Sacred Elements. I know nothing of these elements beside that they lie somewhere on the Earth. You shall go by the names I give you. Shadow spirit, you are Nightshadow. Light spirit, you are Angelclaws," he replied. "Yes, spirit," the two chorused. "We shall do our best to gather the Sacred Elements." So the Earth spirit sent them down to solid ground in a wisp of smoke, and when they opened their eyes, they were in a city, as cats. Nightshadow was a black cat, and Angelclaws was white and blue. So that day, they set off on their adventure.
Angelclaws bounded after Nightshadow, her claws gripping the grass that had become damp with dew. She jumped over a fallen tree and finally caught up. Where are we? wondered Nightshadow. Oh, I know, "Angelclaws, I think we're in a lawn," she mewed. "It's quite a large lawn for a city, isn't it?" she continued. "I hope no one spots us... Anyway, whoever owns this lawn must love plants. There are so many trees and flowers here!" "Well, let’s find our way around." Angelclaws meowed back. "Yeah," Angelclaws said, shuffling her paws with unease. She saw a human and flicked her ear. It was a signal to run. Angelclaws watched the human approach. She unsheathed her claws and hissed, making sure Nightshadow got away. It tried to pick up Angelclaws, but she scratched it and fled. "Let’s get out of here!" As Nightshadow ran through the few meters across the yard, she glimpsed back at Angelclaws. Angelclaws must not have known that most humans were friendly. Nightshadow yowled out a message. "Angelclaws!" she screeched. "I don't think that human means to harm you! Just run!" Meanwhile, Angelclaws was panting like crazy. "I don't wanna become someone's pet who eats slop!" she hissed. "I know, I know! I don't either! But maybe you should have made a kinder approach! Besides, the food can’t be that bad!" Nightshadow replied. Angelclaws’ eyes narrowed. She shook her head and ran past Nightshadow, the she-cat’s long white fur brushing against Nightshadow’s side.
